In the elementary-level German classes, the focus lies on immersive learning, aiming for maximal exposure to the German language while minimizing the use of the student’s native language, typically English. Rituals within the classroom, such as songs, games, and poems, are employed to create a familiar environment for the children. Pedagogical actions are meticulously planned and prepared, ensuring that instruction and support are purposeful. The teaching methodology is action-oriented, emphasizing interactive learning experiences. Fun and enjoyment are integral aspects of the learning process, encouraging active engagement from the students.

Themes and Cultural Context

The selection and exploration of themes are tailored to resonate with the concrete life experiences of the children, encompassing aspects such as family life, living environments, nutrition, shopping, body and senses, clothing, daily routines, birthdays, numbers, and colors. Social and cultural backgrounds that shape individuals’ everyday lives are incorporated into these learning processes, fostering awareness and
understanding of diversity. Any disparities among the students are approached with care and responsibility, ensuring that no experiences are pitted against one another. The curriculum is predominantly action-oriented, occasionally incorporating multiple perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches.

Language Acquisition Support

Language learning among children is significantly aided by exposure to proficient language models. The teacher assumes the responsibility of cultivating a conducive learning atmosphere, where children from diverse backgrounds feel acknowledged, supported, and encouraged. All teachers involved in regular or preparatory classes contribute to enhancing German language proficiency among students.

Integration of New Students

Welcoming new students, particularly those with limited or no knowledge of German, poses a significant challenge that requires thoughtful thematic and methodological considerations. Language Skills Development

Various language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing are systematically developed through targeted exercises and activities. Attention is given to phonetic awareness, vocabulary expansion, comprehension, and expression. Reading comprehension, particularly in extracting meaning from texts, is emphasized, with strategies to tackle vocabulary and grammar challenges effectively.

Grammar Instruction

Grammar instruction is seamlessly integrated into thematic learning fields, emphasizing practical language application over rote memorization of grammatical terms. Students engage in active exploration and experimentation with language structures, facilitating a
deeper understanding of grammar in context. Activities include commands, verb conjugation, noun genders, articles, singular/plural forms, compound words, personal pronouns, adjectives, and prepositions.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

Formative assessments are conducted regularly to gauge students’ language proficiency and track their progress. Additionally, standardized assessments like the IVAA1 comparison tests provided by the ZfA are administered annually in grades 4 to 6 to document students’ language development. Parents are invited to participate in discussions regarding their child’s progress, with successful completion paving the way for advancement to grade 7.
