FINAL REPORT: INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Intern: Annika Erhardt | German School Campus, Newport Beach

In this final report, Annika reflects on her five-month teaching internship at the German School Campus in Newport Beach — offering insights into classroom teaching, school projects, and her cultural journey in California.

As my internship at the German School Campus comes to an end, I look back on five intense and rewarding months during which I was able to learn a great deal both professionally and personally. Time flew by, and it was marked by valuable experiences that gave me so much more than just technical knowledge; they will accompany me on my future path as an educator.

Insights into a New Educational System

Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to gain insights into a new educational system and participate in both German and Spanish lessons. A particularly defining experience for me was working with different age groups, from kindergarten to high school. The students brought diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, which presented me with new challenges but simultaneously helped me expand my intercultural skills.

Highlight: My Own Forest Project

A special highlight was the implementation of my own “Forest Project” in the lower German classes. I was able to contribute creatively and independently, from planning and material selection to execution. The children engaged with topics such as the layers of the forest, tree species, and typical forest animals. I learned how important visual materials and creative approaches are for sustainable learning. Incorporating audio elements and movement games showed me how lively and engaging a classroom can be.

School Life and Graduation Ceremony

Furthermore, I was able to support school events such as Carnival, the Easter celebration, the DSD and ÖSD exams, and various small activities. This gave me insights into school life beyond regular lessons. A beautiful conclusion to my time at the German School Campus was the large graduation ceremony held on campus last Saturday. In addition to the ceremonial presentation of certificates and the farewell to this year’s graduates, I was also officially bid farewell.

Personal Growth

During the course of this internship, I significantly expanded not only my professional skills but also my social competencies. Interacting with the children and the staff, patiently supporting individual learning processes, and flexibly reacting to different learning situations strengthened my identity as a teacher. The moments where I had to spontaneously rethink or improvise were particularly educational.

Cultural Experiences in California

Outside of school life, I had the opportunity to get to know American culture in many different ways. Numerous excursions in the region—to the beautiful coasts, national parks, and cultural landmarks—gave me an intensive look at daily life and the scenic and societal diversity of California. These experiences have broadened my horizons and sensitized me to cultural differences and similarities.

Looking back, my internship at the German School Campus was an exceptionally valuable time. I was able to gain practical insights into everyday school life, apply and expand my knowledge, and gather important experience in dealing with an international student body. I take home many wonderful memories, new skills, and strengthened self-confidence.
