Shrove Monday Fun: K-2nd Class Bakes Delicious “Berliner”
Shrove Monday, or Rosenmontag, is a day full of joy, tradition, and of course, sweet treats! At the German School Campus, our K-2nd grade class dove into a hands-on baking adventure, making Berliner—the iconic German doughnut filled with apricot jam.
Learning by Doing – A Sweet Approach!
Our motto for the day was “learning by doing.” What better way to engage young minds than by letting them touch, roll, shape, and taste their creations? From start to finish, our little bakers were fully immersed in the process.
Step 1: Making the Dough
Little hands got busy measuring flour, cracking eggs, and mixing ingredients to form a soft, fluffy dough. The excitement was real as they watched the dough rise, knowing that soon it would turn into something delicious!
Step 2: Rolling and Cutting
With rolling pins in action, the kids carefully flattened the dough and used round cutters to shape their Berliner. Each child proudly crafted their own, making sure they looked just right for frying!
Step 3: Baking and Filling
Once golden brown and ready to go, it was time for the sweet surprise—apricot jam! Using piping bags, the kids filled their Berliner with just the right amount of fruity goodness. The smiles on their faces said it all!
Step 4: The Best Part – Eating!
No baking lesson is complete without tasting the results. Powdered sugar sprinkled on top, warm doughnuts in hand, and big happy bites—our young bakers enjoyed every moment of their sweet success!
A Fun-Filled Afternoon of Learning & Laughter!
This hands-on experience was more than just baking; it was a sensory journey that combined language learning, teamwork, and cultural traditions most deliciously. The kids not only learned about German customs but also built confidence in following steps, measuring, and creating something from scratch.
A huge Dankeschön to all the little chefs and of course the teacher Alexandra Wurfler for their enthusiasm and creativity! We can’t wait for our next culinary adventure. What should we bake next?
