The Three Wise Men and Star Singing in Germany

On January 6, Christians in Germany celebrate the holiday of the Three Wise Men. This special day commemorates the Magi – Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar – who followed the star to Bethlehem to present the newborn Jesus with precious gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts symbolize royal dignity, divine worship, and Christ’s suffering. Closely tied to this day is the tradition of star singing, where children dressed as kings go door to door singing songs and collecting donations for children in need.

Significance of the Festival

The Three Wise Men represent the universal reach of Jesus’ birth, emphasizing the diversity of people who bow before Christ. Their gifts – gold, frankincense, and myrrh – carry profound symbolic meaning that continues to be shared through sermons and traditions today.

Tradition of Star Singing

One of the most beautiful traditions associated with the Three Wise Men is star singing. During this practice, children, often in groups of three or four, dress as the Magi and walk through neighborhoods:

  • Symbolism: They carry a star, representing the Star of Bethlehem.
  • Activities: They sing songs, recite poems, and bring the blessing of Jesus’ birth.
  • Charity: Donations collected are used to support children’s aid projects in developing countries.

After their visit, the star singers write the blessing “20+C+M+B+25” (for the current year) on the door. This stands for “Christus Mansionem Benedicat,” meaning “Christ bless this house.”

Community and Engagement

Star singing is not only a cherished custom but also a vibrant expression of solidarity and charity. It reminds us to take responsibility for others, especially children in need. Since 1959, this tradition has been officially organized by the Three Kings’ Campaign, supported by Catholic children’s aid organizations.

Regional Specialties

Different regions in Germany have unique variations of star singing:

  • Bavaria: Often accompanied by musical performances.
  • Lusatia and the Ore Mountains: Processions with medieval origins are common.
