Internship Report Week 1

Intern: Annika Erhardt

Preparations and the First Week of My Internship at the German School Campus in Newport Beach

Hello! My name is Annika, and I am about to complete my Master of Education in Biology and Chemistry at the University of Ulm, Germany. Before starting my teaching traineeship, I decided to take a gap year to explore new teaching methods and develop my intercultural skills by completing an internship at a German school abroad.

Discovering the German School Campus

While browsing the website “Lehrer-weltweit,” I came across the German School Campus in Newport Beach. The school immediately caught my attention due to its diverse cultural programs and informative website. I quickly submitted my application and was thrilled to receive an invitation for a virtual interview with Ms. Schoeneich, the principal. The interview went smoothly, and soon, I began planning my stay.

Preparing for My Journey

In the weeks leading up to my internship, I applied for my visa, booked my flight, and arranged accommodations. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Throughout this process, Ms. Schoeneich provided invaluable support, answering all my questions and helping me feel prepared.

Arriving in Newport Beach

My adventure began on January 4, 2025, when I departed from Frankfurt Airport. After a long journey, including a layover in Charlotte, I arrived at John Wayne Airport in the evening. Ms. Schoeneich gave me a warm welcome and took me to a hotel for the night, allowing me to rest after the long trip. The next morning, we picked up my rental car in San Diego and stopped in Laguna Beach to enjoy a snack at a small café while admiring the Pacific Ocean. Later that evening, I settled into my accommodation and began preparing for my first week.

First Week of Teaching

On Monday afternoon, I met the teaching staff and began my first assignment, supervising students as they practiced verb conjugations. I also participated in a special event where certificates were awarded for a Christmas drawing competition. From the start, I felt welcomed and integrated into the school community.

Throughout the week, I familiarized myself with German classes, both online and in person, in Newport Beach. Additionally, I accompanied the Spanish classes on Tuesday and Thursday in Huntington Beach. These experiences offered valuable insights into lesson planning and the challenges of teaching in a foreign language environment. In one German class, I gave a presentation about my study city, Ulm, sparking lively discussions and questions from the students.

Exploring the Area

In my free time, I explored the beautiful surroundings of Newport Beach. I visited local beaches, strolled through Balboa Island, and discovered typical American stores. On Friday, I assisted Ms. Schoeneich with bookkeeping, combining work with a trip to San Clemente. There, I enjoyed the city’s charm and a stunning sunset on the beach. Immersing myself in American culture, I tried various cafés and embraced the vibrant local lifestyle.

Reflections on My First Week

My first week at the German School Campus was an enriching experience. I gained practical teaching experience, developed a deeper understanding of intercultural education, and had the chance to explore a new environment. I look forward to the weeks ahead, continuing to grow both personally and professionally in this unique setting.
