WEEK 2: TEACHING CHALLENGES
University Practicum: Newport Beach & Huntington Beach, California
During my second week at German School Campus, I encountered new challenges and rewarding teaching experiences. From leading a German class independently to assisting with Spanish lessons, I gained valuable insights into the world of education. Additionally, I had the chance to explore California’s stunning landscapes, making my internship a truly enriching experience.
Taking on New Teaching Challenges
In this report, Annika describes her second week of her German teaching internship at German School Campus in Newport Beach. On Monday, an unexpected opportunity arose when Sarah fell ill, and I had to take over her class. To make learning engaging, we started with circle games to practice forming and pronouncing German sentences. Following this, we created a vocabulary list based on my previous presentation about Ulm. Teaching solo was both rewarding and challenging, emphasizing the importance of adaptability in education.
Assisting in Spanish Classes
Tuesday brought another opportunity to expand my teaching experience. I assisted Ms. Schoeneich in teaching the Spanish class, where we reviewed clothing vocabulary through interactive games. Watching students improve was fulfilling, and I even learned a few new Spanish words, adding to my beginner-level knowledge.
Exploring German Geography and Language Exams
The online class on Tuesday covered German geography, where students learned about federal states and their unique features. On Wednesday, we shifted focus to picture descriptions and preparations for the DSD-I exam in March. Observing the exam preparation process was insightful and provided a deeper understanding of language assessment.
Learning Grammar and Improving Spanish
Thursday’s Spanish lesson in Huntington Beach introduced students to definite and indefinite articles. Through various exercises, they practiced grammar rules and applied their knowledge in context. My involvement not only helped students but also enhanced my own Spanish proficiency.
Exploring California’s Natural Beauty
The weekend was dedicated to discovering California’s scenic wonders. Kira and I hiked through picturesque canyons, enjoying breathtaking views. I also visited Laguna Beach, where I took the trolley along the coast and explored Heisler Park. The vibrant flowers, endless ocean, and golden sunshine created an unforgettable experience. I wrapped up the weekend with a visit to an American cinema, enjoying salty popcorn and a historical German film.
Looking Forward to More Experiences
My second week at German School Campus was filled with dynamic teaching experiences and memorable adventures. Each challenge strengthened my skills, and I eagerly anticipate the weeks ahead.
