Praktikum beim GERMAN SCHOOL campus
Ich bin Jasmin Hashemzada und 23 Jahre alt. Ich bin in Hamburg geboren und dort auch aufgewachsen. In den kommenden Wochen bis zu den Sommerferien darf ich Erfahrungen als Teaching Assistant am German School campus sammeln.
Die erste Woche fing bereits spannend an, da ich direkt am ersten Schultag meine Heimatstadt den K-6 Gruppen am wunderschönen Newport Beach Campus vorstellen durfte. Die Grundschüler Innen haben aufmerksam zugehört und die Bilder beschrieben, die ich ihnen gezeigt habe. Sie schienen sehr interessiert zu sein. Dieses Interesse beobachtete ich auch bei den älteren High School SchülerInnen an den darauffolgenden Tagen am Campus in Irvine. Vorab war es interessant zu erfahren, was die fortgeschritteneren Deutsch Lernerinnen bereits über Hamburg wussten. Viele wussten bereits aus den vergangenen Schuljahren, wo Hamburg liegt, dass die Elbe durch die Stadt fließt und dass der Hafen eine große Wichtigkeit darstellt. Auch in der darauffolgenden Stunde behielten sie viele der neuen Informationen im Kopf und konnten sich etwa an die neue Elbphilharmonie, die Speicherstadt oder die weltbekannten Fischbrötchen erinnern.
Für mich war das eine großartige und aufschlussreiche erste Schulwoche, in der ich die Schülerinnen kennlernen durfte und ihnen auch ein wenig über mich und meine Heimatstadt erzählen konnte.
Das Wochenende habe ich mit meiner Schwester in Long Beach verbracht. Sie macht an der CSULB ein Auslandssemester und wir haben uns gemeinsam die Universität angeschaut und später dann auch in der Stadt gebummelt. Am Abend fuhren wir zusammen ins Autokino und erfüllten mir damit einen Kindheitstraum.
Nächste Woche steht das große Osterfest an und ich kann es kaum erwarten an der Planung und Durchführung beteiligt zu sein sowie die Familien unserer SchülerInnen persönlich kennenzulernen. Es ist schön zu sehen, dass sich außerhalb Deutschlands eine kleine Deutsche Community gebildet hat.
I am Jasmin Hashemzada, and I am 23 years old. I was born and raised in Hamburg. In the coming weeks until the summer vacations, I am allowed to gain experience as a teaching assistant at the German School campus.
The first week already started excitingly because I was allowed to introduce my hometown to the K–6 groups at the beautiful Newport Beach campus directly on the first school day. The elementary school students listened attentively and described the pictures I showed them. They seemed very interested. I also saw this kind of interest in the older high school students at the Irvine campus the days after I was there. Beforehand, it was interesting to learn what the more advanced German learners already knew about Hamburg. Many already knew from previous school years where Hamburg is located, that the Elbe flows through the city, and that the port is greatly important. Even in the following lesson, they retained much of the new information in their heads. They were able to remember, for example, the new Elbphilharmonie concert hall, the Speicherstadt warehouse district, or the world-famous fish rolls.
It was a great and informative first week of school, during which I was able to get to know the students and tell them a little about myself and my hometown.
I spent the weekend with my sister in Long Beach. She is doing a semester abroad at CSULB, and we went to see the university together, and later we also strolled around the city. In the evening, we went to the drive-in movie theater together, fulfilling a childhood dream of mine.
Next week is the big Easter celebration. I can’t wait to be involved in the planning and execution and meet the families of our students in person. It is nice to see that a small German community has formed overseas.
